Local Disaster Team Member |
Your first step in becoming a disaster team member is to take our FREE online "Introduction to Disaster" class. This class will help you to match your skills with our various disaster functions and determine your next step in volunteering on the local disaster action team. The on-call Disaster Action Team (DAT), is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. DAT members are activated upon notification of a local disaster by authorities and respond immediately, providing assistance at the scene. This assistance is free, and typically includes food, clothing, shelter, and any necessary medications, as well as much needed emotional support. For additional needs, referrals to other available community resources are provided. |

Are you willing to take the next step? Local volunteers with the appropriate Red Cross training are eligible for membership in Minnesota's Rapid Response Team (RRT) system. Enrollment in the RRT enables local volunteers to serve on Red Cross disaster assignments in other parts of the state. These assignments are typically for a two week period to help those in need. Training, transportation, and meals are covered. |

Are you willing travel out of state to help those in need? Local volunteers with the appropriate Red Cross training are eligible for membership in the National Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) system. Enrollment in the DSHR enables local volunteers to serve on national Red Cross disaster assignments in other parts of the country. These assignments are typically for a three week period, and involve volunteer work in one of more than 20 Red Cross Disaster Services functions. These functions range from shelter operations and mass care to fundraising and damage assessment. |

Community Disaster Education |
Part of our Red Cross mission includes helping people prepare for disasters that may occur in our community. This involves setting up displays, handing out brochures, or preparing presentations for groups. If you enjoy talking to people and presenting information, this is the job for you!

Health Services |
Whenever the Red Cross opens a shelter or service center, an RN must be on duty at all times, with assistance from EMTs and LPNs. If your professional training puts you into one of these categories, you could help fill this critical role in times of need. A one day training course will familiarize you with the Red Cross Disaster Services system, necessary forms, and resources for referrals. |
