According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is estimated that there are 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 people in the United States who have HIV/AIDS, and there are 40,000 new cases of infection every year. Many people who have AIDS or HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, did not believe they were at risk.
The Goodhue County Chapter offers FREE HIV/AIDS presentations for schools and community groups that is always taught in a professional, responsible, and age-appropriate manner. Participants learn the facts about HIV and AIDS, how it is and is not spread, how to protect themselves and each other, how to respond in informed ways to people who are living with HIV/AIDS, and are given the opportunity to ask anonymous questions. The newest activity to accompany our presentations is HIV/AIDS BINGO and a "Fact or Myth" game.
Participants of the presentation will:
- Be able to identify risks related to HIV
- Develop skills related to decision making to avoid risks of HIV infection
- Explore advantages in deciding to postpone sex or not to use drugs or alcohol
Presentations are flexible; they can be done in 45-90 minute periods and can be specifically designed for each group. We are willing to present to multiple sessions and/or classes throughout the day!
"There were teens talking so it was more like us instead of an adult that just says the do's and don'ts."
"It helped me realize how easy you can get it, so I think I'm gonna be more careful now!"
"It wasn't strict and boring. You tried to keep us interested and included in the presentation."
If you would like to become better informed about this important and often misunderstood illness, sign up for an HIV/AIDS education presentation for your school or community group. Please contact the chapter office at (651)388-9166.
